2 Wheel Drive - Round 3 The 3rd round of the 2wd regional series was held at the North East R/C Racing Club which was formerly known as Durham City Model Car Club. The venue was the same as in previous years, held at the Nissan Factory in between Washington and Sunderland. The club stepped in to run this round when Harrogate club was unable to secure a venue, and Bill Alison, George Stoker, Tony Snee and the team did a great job.
The track isn't permanent at the factory and the ground is quite bumpy in places. Even though a lot of work had gone into preparing the racing surface, a few drivers were concerned about the long grass. This was never really an issue though as the weather was hot and dry and very soon the grass was worn away to give a fairly consistent surface. Schumacher Yellow Mini-spikes were the tyre of choice and Round by Round was used for qualifying.
Qualifying was for most inconsistent, as the artificial jumps proved quite difficult to get right every lap as some of the pictures show. Richard Lowe, David Snee on his home track, and Dan Greenwood with a win in the last round made up the top three after 4 rounds.
David Snee had only just returned back from a holiday in Spain a few hours before the event started, but this didn't prevent him from scoring 3,1,3 in qualifying and winning the A final. The A final was a fine example of close racing with the lead sometimes changing several times on the same lap. Paul Bradby finished second to David from P10 and said afterwards that it was the most fun he'd had racing for ages. George Stoker also commented that it was one of the best A Finals he had ever seen.
Next weekend (2nd/3rd July) sees the NE Series visit Batley which is also holding the BRCA Junior Finals at the end of July. A few stalwarts of racing are planning on getting a bit of practice in for the Vets which is also being held at the Juniors, so to avoid disappointment, get your entry for the regional in now at brca-northeast.net
